GRG offers an extensive Cocurricular program that provides students with many opportunities to reach their personal best outside the classroom. Students are encouraged to be self-directed, build self-confidence and test their personal limits in team and individual activities.
Activities such as Music and Dance feature prominently in the co-curricular program available at GRG, however the list of options for the students to choose from grows each year. Students are encouraged to participate in the programs on offer as we continue to emphasise the importance of educating and growing the whole person.
You will never know your limits unless you push yourself to reach them.
GRG offers an SES Cadet Program for secondary students. The SES has become part of the culture at GRG over the past 9 years. Our students enjoy a special relationship with our local unit and benefit from the wealth of experience they bring into the school.
This is a ten week program in which students learn about the roles and functions of the SES, safety, emergency management and communications. Students learn teamwork and leadership by participating in activities and scenarios specifically designed to expand their comfort zone and challenge them to take greater responsibility.
The cadetship culminates in a two day camp to consolidate and test the skills they have learnt. During the camp, each cadet is required to lead their team through various scenarios. The GRG cadets need to be inspirational when leading their teams, and supportive and dedicated when working under the direction of their peers from around the State.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is offered to all students in Years 9 – 12. It enables them to experience new activities, meet people and challenge themselves.
The award involves participants completing and satisfying the requirements for community service, a skill, physical recreation and an adventurous journey.
We live in a world where communication is an important part of our everyday lives. Learning to communicate clearly, effectively and passionately is an essential skill that will not only benefit students while they are at school, but stay with them for the rest of their lives. Year 7 and 8 debaters participate in the MISA Debating Competition as well as joining the Years 9 – 12 teams in the HICES competition.
For the past 16 years, students chosen from each House have entered the Inter House Public Speaking Competition to compete for the Johnson Cup – a perpetual trophy awarded to the Champion House. There are 4 divisions of speakers: Year 7, Year 8, Intermediate students– Years 9 and 10 and Senior students.
Year 5 and 6 students enter the event in their year cohort rather than Houses to encourage a greater level of participation and to build on their level of self confidence to speak in front of a large audience. This process starts in Kindergarten where students lead the weekly Assembly on a rotation basis.
GRG enters the Mock Trial Competition each year with a team usually comprised of Years 11 and 12 students. Schools from around NSW are organised into Regions and GRG is part of the Metropolitan South West Region.
The team spend many lunch times and afternoons working through and analysing the case scripts sent through from the Law Society to prepare their case as either prosecution or defence. Much of the team’s time is also spent researching past cases, revising script lines and preparing questions and responses for cross-examinations.
The competition provides the team with many opportunities to delve into and apply legal concepts, and display their understanding of the law. Along with these skills, the students are given the opportunity to collaborate as a team and exercise some new skills. Being part of this competition is challenging for the team to understand cases and legal concepts from different perspectives, and the actions and directions that can be taken when dealing with the application of law.
GRG enters two teams in the Write a Book in a Day initiative, one from Stage 4 and one from Stage 5. Team members are selected to include a range of talents including creative writing, illustration, organisation, editing and presentation. Each team receives a unique set of parameters at 8am on the writing day. Their story must be based on and primarily written around these five parameters. These parameters will be: two human characters, one non-human character, a setting and an issue. The story may include secondary characters and settings but the parameters are the key components.
Each team is assigned five random words to be included anywhere in the 4,000 – 5,000 word story. The students really enjoyed this unique challenge, knowing that their story would be distributed to children undergoing treatment in hospitals in Australia.
